Big Sur Valley, Sunset by Caitlin Reclusado of Reckless Arts

Taken from the trail that re-connected the residents of Big Sur during the bridge collapse in 2017, this image shows a vivid sunset at the edge of Big Sur’s valley. The sky is saturated with vibrant oranges and buttery yellows before it fades in the soft periwinkles and pale blues. A few trees stand in dark contrast to the bright sky, looking down on the rest of the valley which is bathed in the soft light of the oncoming dusk.

Caitlin Reclusado started her journey in photography at the ripe old age of three, armed with a scandalously neon-orange 110m camera. The photographs themselves were not terribly memorable, but she fell in love with light and the ability to capture one’s view of the world. When the time came for college, she went to Brooks Institute, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Art. As an artist, she believes first and foremost that we are all beautiful. And her goal is to live in a world where we aren’t taught to ignore or diminish our own rarity. Instead, she wants to live in a world where we are taught to embrace that gift. Where we remember and honor our inherent beauty and connection to nature, to the cycles and the seasons. She feels that we are given such a narrow definition of what is beautiful in this world. Her hope as a photographer is to help broaden that definition.
